An excerpt about David (chapter 2)

David was thinking and Cooper’s voice faded into the background. There had to be some way to use this information to his advantage, but what? And how? His advisors normally fed him strategies and market indicators when he needed a sign, but now he would need to find one himself.

A young, blonde Kylie Minogue lookalike swished past the table, dropping a half-empty whiskey glass. The amber liquid trickled across the table, and the girl disappeared down the hallway. David regarded the glass, lying on its side, its logo facing up. “Ballybeg? Ballybeg? Wait! Is that where the whiskey comes from?”

Mr. Cooper feebly pointed to a mirrored pub sign on the wall. “Yes, indeed.”

The spilled whiskey soaked into an open Forbes Magazine. The headline declared, “Leading French Firm Seeking Intro to Northern Ireland’s Hospitality Market.” The article highlighted the plans of the Syndicat international de Tours to secure a foothold on Antrim’s north coast for a breathtaking new leisure complex. Mr. Marcel Laurel had been interviewed in his London office: “The Syndicat is searching for secure local partners for the venture. This is only the first phase. We plan expansive future growth.”

David glanced at the Forbes article and the upended glass. A market indicator! He bashed the table. “That’s it!” he said, swatting the small man roughly on the shoulder and lunging for the door. Bugsy Carter moved to open it, but David got there first. He yanked it open and knocked his just-arriving divorce attorney back onto the sidewalk. David didn’t look back. He was going home. To Ballybeg. The Old Country.
